Local SEO is essential for businesses that want to attract nearby customers, but with so much misinformation floating around, it's easy to waste time on strategies that don't actually help. Let's break down some of the most common misconceptions and focus on the tactics that truly improve local search rankings.

Myth #1: Stuffing Your Google Business Profile with Keywords Boosts Rankings

The Truth: While it's important to include relevant keywords in your Google Business Profile(GBP), keyword stuffing—loading your business name, description, or services with excessive keywords—can actually hurt your rankings. Google prioritizes profiles that provide a clear and natural description of the business.

What Moves the Needle:

  1. Writing a concise, informative business description that naturally includes key terms.
  2. Choosing the correct primary and secondary categories for your business.
  3. Regularly updating your profile with fresh content, including posts, photos, and Q&A responses.

Myth #2: More Citations Automatically Lead to Higher Rankings

The Truth: Citations (mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on directories) are essential for local SEO, but sheer quantity doesn't guarantee higher rankings. Low-quality or inconsistent citations actually hurt your credibility.

What Moves the Needle:

  1. Ensuring all citations are accurate and consistent across major directories (Google, Yelp, Bing, Facebook, etc.).
  2. Focusing on industry-specific and high-authority directories.
  3. Keeping your Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) information up to date.

Myth #3: You Don't Need Reviews to Rank Locally

The Truth: Customer reviews play a huge role in local search rankings. Google considers both the quantity and quality of reviews when determining rankings.

What Moves the Needle:

  1. Encouraging satisfied customers to leave Google reviews.
  2. Responding to all reviews (both positive and negative) to show engagement.
  3. Using keywords naturally in responses to reinforce relevance.

Myth #4: Posting on Google Business Profile Doesn't Help Rankings

The Truth: While GBP posts don't directly boost rankings, they increase engagement, which indirectly impacts search engine visibility. Google favors active profiles, and posts help provide fresh, relevant content for potential customers.

What Moves the Needle:

  1. Posting weekly updates, promotions, or events to keep your profile active.
  2. Using high-quality images and relevant CTAs.
  3. Answering customer questions in the Q&A section.

Myth #5: Local SEO Is a One-Time Task

The Truth: Local SEO requires ongoing optimization. Search algorithms, competitor strategies, and customer behaviors constantly evolve, meaning what worked last year may not be enough today.

What Moves the Needle:

  1. Regularly updating your website, business listings, and content.
  2. Monitoring analyticsand adjusting your strategy accordingly.
  3. Staying informed on Google's local search algorithm updates.

When it comes to local SEO, focusing on what truly moves the needle is key. Prioritize optimizing your Google Business Profile, maintaining citation consistency, generating reviews, engaging with local content, and keeping up with search trends. By applying proven strategies, you'll increase your visibility and attract more local customers.

Why Your New Website Isn’t Showing Up in Google Yet
By Rikki Broussard October 22, 2025
Hey everyone, it’s Rikki here! I like to write blogs based on real questions from our clients. Recently, we launched two brand-new websites on fresh domains. Everything about the design, development, and launch went smoothly, but once the sites were live, both clients asked the same question: “Why can’t I find my site on Google yet? Launching a new website is exciting. After weeks (sometimes months) of planning and building, the site is finally live. Naturally, the next step is to open Google, type in one of your main keywords, and expect to see your business right at the top. But here’s the reality: search engines don’t work like flipping a light switch. It’s completely normal (although frustrating) for brand-new websites to take time before appearing in Google search results . How Google Finds and Ranks Websites When your new site goes live, Google has to: Crawl – Send its “bots” to scan and read the site. Index – Store those pages in Google’s database. Rank – Decide where your site belongs in the search results compared to competitors. Submitting a sitemap and setting up Google Search Console helps Google know your site exists. But discovery doesn’t mean instant visibility; it just means the process has started.
